In my opinion there is a general issue with the connection to the backend which is not reachable for unknown reason or where the client request URL is not correct and can't find the resources.
A 500 error might be caused by a backend refusing connections or a "man-in-the-middle" which is preventing the traffic to go through.
Did you track the connection with wireshark and/or Fiddler?
